It certainly is not from a want of biographers or of critics that any mystery still hangs over Shakespeare's memory. N 0 other writer, perhaps, that ever lived has been the object of half so much minute, and patient, and varied research. The very multiplicity, combined with the incompleteness of the details which the antiquaries have discovered, has in no small degree contributed to complicate and to darken the very elements upon which any judgment we may form of him must be founded. Englishmen, however, owed it to the fame of their wonderful poet that they Should endeavour to shed every accessible light on his life and his labours; and we have all some reason to feel grateful to the men who have, with such immense toil, and with such proportionately small results, devoted themselves to this undertaking.

One of my favorite books on Shakespeare. Written about 1850 Kenney is a real scholar and this book is just chock full of facts that I never knew. One of the reasons I bought it was that I learned somewhere else that Kenny was the first scholar who thought that those two quartos that came out in 1594 and 1595, The Contention and The True Tragedy, which before it was though were written by others, perhaps Marlowe, Peele, Greene, and were touched up with added scenes by Shakespeare, were in fact, "bad" quartos of Henry VI, parts two and three, and were wholly written bv Shakespeare. It is an interesting idea, and explains some things.
He takes on many other interesting issues that are still being argued today, like the spelling of Shakespeare's name.
This is an old, but like a fine wine it grows better with age.
